Photos & Words.
Another ideal life: photographer, photojournalist, anything that has to do with getting paid to capture images…especially travel photography.
This website has combined two great loves effortlessly. With each of these photos I wanted to know more about what was going on…and I was able to read and find out.
Bright Lights, Ancient City
After an amazing meal and a bottle of red wine in Orvieto, Italy, I explored the city’s narrow alleyways. I could hear faint music escaping from trattorias and coffee shops as the Umbria Jazz Festival buzzed along. Having grown up in the suburbs of northern Virginia (where it seems like everything was built in the last 20 years), I could hardly comprehend the age and character of a town that predates the Roman Empire.

Camelback
Navigating a foreign country is that much trickier when you aren’t on speaking terms with your girlfriend. Our relationship was on the rocks before we’d left, but neither of us wanted to sabotage our two-month journey around the world. By the time we got to Morocco, communication was already breaking down. She was the one who spoke French, but when we tried to barter for goods, sellers pretended not to hear her. On top of that, I lost my camera bag, leaving me with only my little Pentax to capture my experience. In short, nothing was going according to plan. But riding a camel out into the desert at dusk nearly made up for all of these troubles.

This is the time when I say, “I wish I was a graphic designer.” Because if I was a graphic designer I could make cool stuff like these cards… or better yet work for such a fun company (them and about 100 other places I can think of!). I’ve been tasked with finding just the right holiday card to send out this year. Although I have shamelessly mocked the annual-obligatory-awkward-family-portrait-mailed-to-everyone-to-show-how-fine-we-are, I may have to reconsider the view from my soap box. At first I felt like the portrait-card was really only for those people with kids. This allows those of us who never actually see these so-called kids to feel like they are growing before our very eyes. However, in recent years the photo-card has grown in popularity and expanded beyond the 3-person minimum previously mentioned. And as it so happens, 2009 marked a great year in photos for our little 2-person family, and I think I just might share one or two with the million or so folks on our mailing list. I wish I could afford the cards at Hello!Lucky, but alas a tight budget has forced my hand elsewhere. I also think that a decent alternative is Pear Tree Greetings. I did consider looking to Etsy, but it seemed a little confusing and my procrastination isn’t helping much with the whole timing thing. Who really knows though…with the way I’m moving lately, I’ll be doing good to get anything at all in the mail.

What a wacky week! It actually snowed here. The weather man said it was only the 34th time this has happened in the last 100 years. I decorated my Grandmother’s house (inside and out) with the help of my Mom. We could have given Ethel and Lucy a real run for their money. (Complete with our very own “Christmas Miracle!” which involved a section of broken lights, a garden hoe, and A LOT of laughing!) I lost and then found my Manchester Kitty… he was hiding in the bed. (No, not under the covers, but inside the box spring!) And finally, I attended a Christmas parade that included unusually large reptiles and a Porta-Potty.
Being in SE Texas makes me feel not quite like myself. It’s all so familiar, yet so strange. I end up wanting to do things that I would NEVER want to do, like play golf, have babies and listen to country music. I mean… Really? Who is this crazy person?! I know it’s all temporary, with my weighted center of normal falling just a little off kilter!

The waiting is palpable. I thought by now I would have an answer. But alas, more waiting.
Despite the fact that we are supposed to receive an offer on our house on Thursday, I have continued to arrange and rearrange the little things. This time it was the one shelf with “knick knacks” on it. While cleaning out our storage room this past weekend, I came across two photos I thought I had lost in the shuffle.
Five years ago when I first visited Michigan, Brad’s family wanted to let me know exactly what I was getting into and showed me a ton of his childhood photos. When I saw one with daffodils in the background I remembered I had one similar as a child too. The next time I was at my folks place I dug up the old photo and couldn’t believe it really was the same background. Although separated by 1500 miles, our childhoods were not all that different. Our mothers used the same tuperware; our neighborhoods looked eerily similar; we could basically share childhood memories. It’s kind of weird actually.
And now that these photos have proper frames and prominence in our house, I’m not quite sure if it’s not all a little too creepy. We don’t have children nor do we see them in the future, so it seems strange to me to see these two little people on our wall…

I may have just convinced myself to relocate them again!
I finally went to the printers yesterday and got some prints made. One specifically I wrote about last spring I have finally framed and is ready to go for my friend. I’m really happy with the way it turned it. 11 x 14 matte finish. The frame was on sale at Michael’s and I’m so excited to give it to the new owners this weekend.

***I haven’t quite mastered just how I’m supposed to take a photo of something with glass so as to not get the reflection, strange light, etc.

We spent the afternoon apple picking yesterday. There was a nice break in the rainy fall weather, so we took advantage of the opportunity. I can’t think of a better way to say hello to October.

{We used our booty to try our hand at apple dumplings, Mmmm…..}
so much going on in my life right now that is out of my control. experiencing moments like this bring me peace.

So the lake yesterday, didn’t look much like a lake, but rather wet chaos. With 12 – 18 ft. waves there was definitely no pier jumping happening here!

I like that our farmer’s market is twice a week. The flowers right now are just amazing. These Dahlia’s were as big as my head and subsequently made their way to my dining room table. The sunflowers may have to be my next arrangement, but not quite until the temperature drops a bit more (that may be at the end of this week).

it doesn’t look like summer is over. or at least as seen at the local farmers market which provided me with ample color & cheeriness today. (& we will definitely be eating good tonight.)

After four years I still find the ubiquitous kissing dutch people amusing and worthy of a little snicker. My husband who is originally from this area has been ‘adjusting’ the iconic couple since he was little. I love that every time we go to his grandmother’s cottage, he makes sure that she knows he was there.
So we just couldn’t pack up our last Labor Day at the cottage without his usual signature. I’m 31, I’ve seen him do it for 5 years now… and I still think it’s funny.

and being away from technology. i even had to use a pay phone…glad I still had the 12 year old calling card in the back of my wallet.

i’ve been away for a bit. visiting with one of my best-est friends, taking a train across the country and then driving back with my mom, and hanging out in the windy-city with my sis. i also leave for a backpacking trip in the rockies this weekend. i love summer.

i’m loving these photos that my hubby snapped.

painting and repainting

When I leave Texas, I always go home with way more than what I started, but this may have been my best score yet. My visit could not have been better.

see for yourself

some very dear friends of ours are leaving tomorrow morning for a new life. we are so sad to see them go. Z-town will never be the same, but we look forward to a nice new vacation spot.
