be stillhow in the world did the holiday season sneak up on me?  it could have something to do with the fact that we’ve moved across the country and that we are living truly in transition.  but this new cd will get me in the right mind for holiday festivities, despite the lack of cold weather and snow.  a girl can dream.

The last few days it seems that I’ve been spending a lot of time in my room desperately trying to catch up on emails, blogs, and other computer related endeavors as well as unpacking and setting up a personal space in someone else’s home.  And all I can say is thank goodness for Pandora.  I’ve been stationed into The Weepies & Laura Marling for the perfect aural environment.

My new accommodation includes a view of a golf course and a very nice little patio nook.  I like going to the large sliding glass door in the mornings and just watching… everything.  I forget how green it is in Southeast Texas, year round.  I also forgot just how many bugs and critters that come with living below the mason-dixon line.  Yuck.  (I can do w/o that cultural experience thank-you-very-much.)  I guess we’re all trying to (re)familiarize ourselves with our new surroundings as the kitties are making their own adjustments too.  Dutch saw his first squirrel and Manchester is trying to figure out what to do about being at eye level with neighborhood cats that come up onto the porch.  I didn’t realize just how insulated those two little kitties have been in our 2nd floor home.  And that’s made me think: maybe I too have been a little too insulated in my life…

i’ve seen a lot of alphabet posters & books lately.  i love most all of them.  and i especially love this book from PASTE magazine.  i particularly thought of you katie!

this is a perfect gift for all the parents of little ones who want to make sure their offspring learn their ABCs from the right perspective!

We don’t need a lot of money.
We’ll be sleeping on the beach,
keeping oceans within reach.
(Whatever private oceans we can conjure up for free.)
I will stumble there with you
and you’ll be laughing close with me,
trying not to make a scene
etcetera. Whatever. I guess all I really mean

is we’re gonna be alright.
Yeah, we’re gonna be alright.
You can close your eyes tonight,
’cause we’re gonna be alright.

So come on now,
I can almost see
that place
on a distant shore.
And courage is a weapon we must use
to find some life you can’t refuse.

is we’re gonna be alright.
Yeah, we’re gonna be alright.
You can close your eyes tonight,
’cause we’re gonna be alright.
All that I can see is your eyes.
Close your eyes.

So sad that John Hughes has died.  But his legacy will live on as will his words to live by…

“Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did was wrong, but we think you’re crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us, in the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain…and an athlete…and a basket case…a princess…and a criminal. Does that answer your question? Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club.” — Brian Johnson

enjoy the day.

I’ve had the wonderful LAURA MARLING playing virtually non-stop this week.  I originally heard hear while in this shop in Canterbury this summer.  We listened to her lots post pilgrimage, but with the changing of the seasons she was put on the shelf only to be rediscovered this past week.  her debut album — Alas I Cannot Swim — is so fantastic.  perfect for even these lazy winter days filled with baking, crafting, and reading.  I just wish that I had been able to go to an actual CD shop to pick up her music.  The cover is so lovely and here is a quote from her website:

…the music is part of a ‘Song Box’, designed by Laura, which contains postcards, trinkets and stories – plus a concert ticket to her shows in March. ‘The idea came of a conversation I had with a guy who owned the studio I was recording in,’ says Marling. ‘He said he was depressed with the way music’s going, because nobody buys records any more and people are listening to MP3s on bad headphones, using music for wallpaper.’ So, she designed the chart-ineligible, beautifully printed ‘Song Box’: ‘I want people to love music,’ she says, ‘I want people to treasure it, not just my songs, but treasure music.’

I would LOVE to get my hands on those postcards!!!  In the mean time, I will have to settle for her pleasing my ears instead of my eyes too.  Go buy her music!
