So Pete Yorn pretty much rocked my face off last night!!!  It was such a fun concert. (All the more so b/c this lady joined us for the festivities!) I don’t know what’s wrong with Grand Rapids, but there was a pretty pitiful turn out.  Sad for Pete, but good for us as were were like 10 feet from him all night!  I think if we could hang with any musician, from any time… I think we’d choose Pete.  It would be a toss up for Brad between him and U2, but I’m with Pete all the way.

Now I’m taking a break from cleaning my house as we are preparing for a private showing today and an open house tomorrow.  Crazy person am I!

Earlier this week I decided to catch up on some blog reading and here are some super fun things that caught my eye.  Man, three weeks away from blog-land and you miss some really good stuff.

06The Czech Republic’s got style. Check out this great blog on all things aesthetically pleasing and inspiring:  Art, Design, Photography, Food, Fashion, Color, Life.  Graphic Designer and quite possibly my Eastern European doppelganger, Raru, certainly does have 79 ideas running through her head…and then some.  I loved her post on the Calligraphy of Russia and the rest of the world and her an eye for unique artists.  I also tend to read her blog with a cool accent.

I’m always the last to know.  But I have a new daily obsession, checking out the findings on Craftgawker.  A lovely gallery of handmade goodness, updated daily.

I seem to have taken a liking to the internet this week… Here are some images from craftgawker. (The image will take you to the owner’s shop.)

…or maybe the best FALL idea ever.  As we have been up to our eyes in apples (and pears) lately i think this is a FANTASTIC way to preserve some of the goodness and also a very thoughtful, handmade gift.  This is definitely one of those… “why didn’t I think of that!”

Found originally by this lovely blogger, but for the full tutorial go to the horses mouth here.

I was looking at the oh-so-lovely blog: The Wife of an Artist and she thankfully posted about the artist Liu Bolin.

I. WAS. AMAZED.

I can’t quite describe why I was so taken with this particular artist and his medium.  It is more than just the obvious talent of the painter, but the deeper vision of Mr. Bolin.  He describes himself as The Invisible Man, silently protesting the lack of his acknowledgement as an individual and artist in his society.  As a Chinese artist he has continually been oppressed and denied value as a contributing member of society.

I cannot fathom the deep dedication it must take to stand for up to 10 hours just to be painted.  I wonder what he thinks about while standing so still…

A couple of the photos are from here (an article about the artist) & here (another lovely blog).

I love tea.  I love all sorts; so when I found a tea I had not tried a few weekends ago I had to find some more.  What initially caught my eye was the lovely tea tin sitting on the counter.  And then I actually tried some.  I knew right away that the Ethos blend would be one of my favorites.  It is a “tranquil blend of chamomile, mint, and rooibos”.  Yum!  You can see more on their website here.

i love the internet.  i do.  mostly because you can find fun stuff like these two things:

Over at Oh Joy! there was a little give away challenge.  Oh Joy! teamed up with DwellStudio for a fabulous oh-so-help-me-this-would-be-amazing-prize.  One lucky person will get a full bedding set (over $800 value).  Each person was asked to choose a Dwell pattern and then find a coordinating fashion accessory.  As of Saturday they had over 500 combinations from which to choose!  Good luck not going blind.

So here’s my combo.  A little prosaic, maybe, but I liked the idea of a little something for me…& a little something for my man.

But the best part about this whole endeavor was that I found a really cool Etsy shop: Toybreaker.  She makes really cool ties.  And with Father’s Day just around the corner, not a bad idea.

That is the expression on one of my husband’s most beloved t-shirts.  It was his great-grandpa’s & they don’t make them any more.  But I thought it the most appropriate expression upon seeing the wonderful flickr group: Dutch Graphic Design.  (I know, I know… I still don’t like flickr though!)

I tell ya, the Dutch may be cheap and drink their courage, but they know good design.  It’s not all windmills and tulips and unusually small kids kissing!

Well, our building is either going to look great or like we were on acid when we picked these colors.  Our local hardware store was running a Grand Opening Special so we decided to take advantage and spruce up the outside of our building.  We have put a ton of TLC into the interior of both floors, but we’ve neglected to outside.  And we’re hoping this will give it a little more curb appeal.  I will certainly post the final product.  (But we have to wait two weekends before tackling this one.)

I am a sucker for good marketing be it on a wine bottle or a book.  I am forever in love with this website that showcases fabulous book cover designs and designers.  I can always peruse when I need a little visual inspiration and I always experience a sense of immediate gratification.  I would love to have all of these covers enlarged and framed to take up and entire wall in my dream house.  I guess it would be the second best thing to having all those actual books around me.

At the moment I seem to be offering a melange of creative services to unexpected people.  And so I think it’s time I take myself a bit more seriously and start carrying with me good old-fashioned calling cards.  I’ve been perusing the internet (instead of writing) for just such an item and now it’s decision time.  I’m torn between a very classic/simple no frills look and that of my more whimsical alter-ego.  Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

I also need to decide square or rectangle, horizontal or vertical…the list goes on.  Hmmm… decisions, decisions.

Again this goes under internet love.  Here is a gal who is selling all she owns.  You can read her story here. I think it would be tough to see each item in my life in an individual photo.  It might actually help me set priorities and also adhere to the 1st principle of living green: REDUCE.

I’m forever in awe of the information super highway. I stumbled across the most lovely little blog that proves to be big on design. Everything posted here is up my alley; the clean aesthetic of all her posts calls to me! Go on over to Traditionally Modern Design and peruse Narineh’s sight.  I can’t wait to see what else she’ll highlight.  Here are a few of the things that caught my eye:

oh-so-help-me!  we have a new favorite website.  it’s absolutely ridiculous.  brad cracks me up; as soon as he saw it he said, “it should be illegal!”  an entire blog with nothing but the cutest kitties in the world.  we’re pathetic…it must be a sickness really.  i like that i’m a little embarrassed for brad and his unabashed love of kitties.  he feels like he can handle it though, being the construction man that he is.  manchester now has some serious competition…

i hate going to the gym.  no, i loathe going to the gym. there’s something about the entire process of being in a crowded, smelly room full of strangers trying not to be seen while doing things to your body that make you look completely uncoordinated.  we get on these machines that have you run, climb, or cycle in place.  where’s the sanity in that?  i don’t usually like people that go to ‘gyms’ either.  (probably because these people see it as another social outlet)  i haven’t been to an official gym since grad school… until now.

a new gym just opened around the corner from my house.  and seeing is how there is snow everywhere and it’s been just painfully cold lately, i won’t go walk outside.  yes, i should be cross country skiing or snow-shoeing, but i seem to be losing my motivation for that.  it’s just so bloody cold.  it also seems that my motivation needs to be green…as in greenbacks.  and if i pay to go torture myself it’s more likely that i will go or that i can at least guilt myself into it.  so i figured why not try it for one month.  this gym — and i use that word liberally — is running a special called ‘afternoon delight’ (like such a fallacious title would suck people like me in).  if you’re willing to workout between 1pm & 4pm it’s only $20 for the entire month.  not a bad deal.  i also don’t mind that this is their lowest time of attendance and therefore i have to put up with fewer ‘gym people’.  most of the folks that go during the ‘afternoon delight’ are the old ladies avoiding afternoon tea with the girls.    i guess i’ll manage for a month…but we’ll see if i can make it a week.

part of the whole gym thing is knowing that spring is just around the corner and I will yet again be exposing myself to the world in ways i should not.  it’s bad enough that i’m pasty white (not the pretty-model-from-ireland-way, but rather that of one-dark-haired girl-who-has-not-seen-the-sun-in-months-sort-of-way) but to be flabby and pasty white is just humiliating.  i wouldn’t even be bothering with it except that my current swimsuit finally needs to be retired and this has forced me to face the fact that i will have to purchase another one.  i have had the same one-piece swimsuit since 2003, originally purchased from the only provider of non-athletic/old-lady one-piece swimsuits and call-girls outfits.  the underwire is popping out, the bottom has thinned a bit and maybe the elasticity is not what is should be.  if i’m going to have to don one of these vile contraptions, it might as well look like something other than a swimsuit, but not quite a moo-moo.  i don’t think i’ll ever be fully comfortable in a swimsuit again, but hopefully i’ll at least not scare small children this year.  while at a trip to mecca the other day I saw this little gem.  praise jesus for target because they actually have nice one-piece swimsuits this year…well nice-er than in the past.  this just might be the one for the next 6 years of my life…that is if i keep working out!

My first award…granted to me by the always-kind OH!.  This lovely little thing is an inspiration award.  I am terribly flattered that anyone finds anything I might say or do inspiring.  I still find myself a bit perplexed as to why I’m even doing this ‘new, hip thing’ — blogging.  But for now it still tickles my fancy and I always enjoy seeing what others are doing in their lives and having a chance to learn something new.  So apparently I am to nominate 7 others for whom their works stand out from the rest.  Lately I can go to these places for inspiration:

marie antonette For Me, For You … for all around fabulousness
Katie at doodlesprouts has always got something going on and can get me to dust off my needles.  (check out her shop too.)
Scott Smith, a.k.a. The Sartorialist for capturing life on the streets
Mandi for doing some cool things with paper and embracing being 23.
Ez over at Creature Comforts for always having the prettiest layouts and pointing me to things I don’t always need, but always want.
Amy at Eggs on Sunday.  Food.  Need I say more? (Photographed so damn well too!)
And Kate the Great for kickin’ ass and taking names.  This lady has got whatever “it” is.  You’ll find visual and audio inspiration where she is.

What is it about babies and animals that I find so damn funny?  Well, to tell the truth, I usually hate things like American’s Funniest Home Videos.  I just get annoyed.  But this morning as I sat on the couch sipping my tea watching CNN I found myself making an unfamiliar morning noise: laughing.  Cracking up actually.  They did a story on this blog.  This is why I love the internet.
