I finally went to the printers yesterday and got some prints made.  One specifically I wrote about last spring I have finally framed and is ready to go for my friend.  I’m really happy with the way it turned it.  11 x 14 matte finish.  The frame was on sale at Michael’s and I’m so excited to give it to the new owners this weekend.

***I haven’t quite mastered just how I’m supposed to take a photo of something with glass so as to not get the reflection, strange light, etc.

this little package is going to make it’s way across the country today.  i hope the recipient is as excited to get it as i was to put it together.  i picked up the tin for a dollar and the napkins for $2.50.  quite a bargain.

i’ve been away for a bit.  visiting with one of my best-est friends, taking a train across the country and then driving back with my mom, and hanging out in the windy-city with my sis.  i also leave for a backpacking trip in the rockies this weekend.  i love summer.

some very dear friends of ours are leaving tomorrow morning for a new life.  we are so sad to see them go. Z-town will never be the same, but we look forward to a nice new vacation spot.

I was feeling inspired by my recent book review, Easter sunday and my friend’s table she set for a dinner party.  I would like to make a print for her, but I can’t decide which one I like better.  I of course like the black and white because well…it’s b&w.  I like the color one because it really captures that moment in her dining room.  Maybe I should switch fonts or something else… Hmm… What do you think?

Last night we had dinner with friends in their beautiful 1920s home.  They are interested in Brad remodeling their basement, so they decided to turn it into a dinner thing since we’ve never all hung out.  I brought over some homemade snickerdoodles and much to my surprise I did not go home empty handed.

Somehow the conversation had turned on me and we were discussing my ineptitude at keeping things alive.  The hostess, a should be professional green-thumb, assured me that she had a plant that I could NOT kill.  I told her I bet that I could and probably faster than anyone she’s known.  I mean, I killed an ivy once for Pete’s sake.  It’s not just neglect that ensures these little life forces meet their fate…I think I hover too much.

None-the-less, my confident friend said that she was positive that I couldn’t kill this plant and to prove it she sent me home with one.  She said she loves to give them away particularly to people like me who should be shunned by any green-loving organization or individual.  I believe that this pretty little purple plant is called a shamrock.  It actually sleeps at night and then opens at first light.  I kinda like that.  Anyway, this particular plant is a seedling from the mother plant that my friend has in her living room.  She said she’s had that same exact plant since she was twelve.  (My friend is in her 40’s now.)  We’ll see, but I’m not holding my breath; I think this could end up very badly for the plant!

A very dear friend is coming over tonight and I’m so excited to give her the gift I made her. It’s just another Amy Butler apron, but I know that she will love it.  She is the best person to give gifts to because she is always crazy excited and appreciative. We have a little project for the night and it’s a bit ambitious.  We are making her a Roman Shade for her bathroom.  She picked out the cutest fabric.  I don’t know why she thinks I will be able to help her; I just know I will ruin her fabric.  We’ll see what sort of hail-mary will hit the fence…

New friends, sweet treats, good memories.

It’s finally here. My last day of work. Tomorrow will end. I will grow. My sweet friend sent me a card this week with a great thought. She wrote me about a story she had recently heard that made her think of me. The quote was:

“Buddhists believe that sometimes when everything is in turmoil, it’s because something wonderful is ready to be born and that thing is distracting you so it can have some privacy during the birthing process.”

What a lovely idea. Although I do not have children, I know the birthing process is not only painful, stressful & glorious, but it can also seem down right indignant. At least that is, from my modest perspective. I love the idea that while I had so much of my energy purposefully, or not, focused on the immediate in front of my eyes, there was something wonderful & new being birthed behind closed doors without me having to participate in the messy details.

My wonderful something has been born and I can’t wait to embrace it upon my return.

My holiday weekend continues as my mother is still in town and will be until Saturday. But in the mean time I’ve had to continue my life as usual. I’m still trying to recover from the weekend…did I forget to mention my husband threw me a surprise party. I always thought they were a good idea…until it happened to me. I think he had a few things going for him: 1.) It wasn’t my birthday (or even the weekend of) 2.) we weren’t at home (we were an hour away) 3.) he’s never managed to surprise me (until now). Yeah…I’ll need years of therapy to recover from that one. Here are a few weekend highlights:

tomorrow is my friend Amy’s birthday. I’ve been jonesing to make some jewelry again and this was the perfect opportunity. I’ve had these beads for a while but I hadn’t thought about using them together until now. I’m totally into long necklaces right now, and this one hits just below the bust line. And I really like the wooden beads with iridescent green ones. The southerner in me couldn’t resist making the matching earrings. (I am definitely my mother’s daughter.) I can see her wearing this with a bold floral or subdued solid. I hope she likes it!

*****Well she loved it…and then I found this little number that I thought would go perfectly!

Today is International Women’s Day. It’s not quite as popular in the States, however all across the world today women are celebrated much like they are on Mother’s Day. Check out the website to learn more about women’s issues around the world and the history of progress for such an important topic. If you feel so inspired you can also turn your well wishes and thoughts into action by supporting a woman with the international non-profit Women for Women.

I not only enjoyed the sun yesterday, but also I made a few things that are on my project list. I started with a project for my mother’s birthday that I will have to wait to post until next week b/c she’ll peek. I then finally made some onesies for my sweet friend Tritia who had a baby 100 years ago. I figured I better get these things to her before he’s old enough to take me out for a drink! Tritia runs the cutest shop ever in San Diego: Beach Bungalow Designs. If you are in the area and want your child’s room decorated…she’s your gal. She ridiculously talented and just plain fabulous. I’ve got a few more pieces to add to her care package (including the completion of this Amy Butler pattern), but here’s the start. (Oh, and yes, the ‘iron on’ design is on the butt!)

So Katie from Doodlesprouts has tagged me!

1. Link to your tagger and post these rules on your blog.
2. Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.
3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.
4. Let them know they are tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

The 7 facts:
1. It is ridiculous how much I love yellow cake batter; I mean ridiculous!
2. I’m originally from Texas.
3. I think because of that I’m obsessed with the weather, any weather event other than hot.
4. I like/want to travel; possibly for a living…so if you know of any way for that to happen let me know!
5. I like to play the guitar and sing in the shower (only in the shower).
6. I like to write, particularly creative non-fiction…or about whatever soap box I’m on that day.
7. I only know two other people who blog! Really. Laurie, Katie…you’re it!

It is because of number 7 that I will link to seven others but not officially “tag” them (I feel kinda weird about it.) Check out these wicked cool folks! I sure wish I knew them; they each inspire in a different way.

Of course my blogroll is full of super-cool folks too.

Oh how I LOVE homemade goodness of all kinds. It has been a wonderful weekend of treats, stories and tons of laughing. It was a high of 5 degrees today so we didn’t go outside, but instead gorged ourselves on french toast, cupcakes, clementines & tea. Katie from doodlesprouts tagged me but I’ll answer that tomorrow!

Check out the fabrics fresh from Tanzania. I can’t wait to put them to good use!

Sorry for the week-long hiatus. It’s been terribly busy with a very sick grandmother, winter snow storm and just life. However my week has ended well with the grandmother making nothing short of a miraculous recovery & my friend Amy has come home from Tanzania. She will be coming over tomorrow and I look forward to catching up and lavishing her with classic American treats. I’ll post the finished product later this weekend. Happy Friday folks!

Preparations

I’m so glad that I saw my friend Katie today because she was able to help me decipher a knitting pattern that I would like to try. She is a fantastic knitter, among other things. It’s not a complicated pattern…but I seem to be challenged with just simple things. So off to the yarn store I will go on Wednesday.

It was a busy week, but here are a few things that caught my fancy & kept me occupied:

:: My eye was drawn to iomoi. I love these paper weights.

:: I also received an update from my friend Amy. She’s coming back to the states in a few weeks.

:: It snowed. We played, we slept.

I received the best surprise in the mail today. My dear friend in Tanzania mailed a Christmas card that I just received. Not only was the card super crafty with just some linen paper, a sharpie and scraps of some African kangas, but she also included two packets of African Peppermint Tea that I am very exited to try.
